Artist Spotlight: Darren Horn
Darren Horn's musical career started in Detroit, where, as a teen, he began jamming with Detroit R&B and funk musicians, such as Cortez Harris of Al Hudson & One Way, who rehearsed across from Horn's aunt's home. What started out as a bit of fun, driven by a love of music, spurred on by proximity and curiosity, developed into regular club appearances at Detroit clubs such as The Twenty Grand, which gave Horn his first taste of professional music experience.
From there, his work ethic, tenacity, and ability earned him industry contacts and expanded opportunities, including his high-profile gig as a pianist and tour manager for Kiara. The duo had a #2 R&B single duet with Shanice Wilson and traveled the nation opening for legends like Gerald Albright, Whitney Houston, Marion Meadows, Luther Vandross, and even Toni Braxton for a short while as her career took off.
After a break, Horn got back into music in the early 2000s with a fresh passion for songwriting and production. He started collaborating with gospel artist AnnaMaria and, more recently, has been making waves in the smooth jazz scene with his solo efforts.
Horn's debut album of 2022, Summertime, unveiled his mix of smooth jazz, gospel, and R&B to the globe, with the title song - penned by the late singer Reginald Davison - getting radio play in the U.S. and Europe. It was both a career and personal milestone, a promise kept to Davison, late band member of The Axe Band.
In 2023, Horn released The Horn Connection EP, which includes billboard-charting musicians Nils and Ragan Whiteside on the uplifting track "Nairobi." The EP combines a mix of original compositions and keyboard-enhanced reinterpretations of standards by Chuck Mangione, Stephanie Mills, and Earth, Wind & Fire.
Darren Horn's music is characterized by melody, hope, and a strong sense of tradition and community. In new songs or reinterpretation of familiar music, his approach is one of resilience and joy—a veteran performer rooted in experience, still writing from the heart, with a commitment to healing the world through music.
